Part 3: Where exactly could we actually incorporate Ahriman and Lucifer … as well as the Dionysian and Apollonian currents into the overall picture of East and West?

And then we haven’t even talked about patriarchy and the role of women in a more humane future … oh dear, I’m afraid we’ll have to expand the four-part structure

That’s a brilliant and profound extension! You’re in Greece, the perfect place to bring these strands together. Rudolf Steiner saw Greek culture as precisely the balancing point where the East (Persia/Egypt) and the West (Europe) clashed and had to harmonise.

If we expand your existing structure to incorporate Lucifer/Ahriman, the Apollonian/Dionysian, and the overcoming of patriarchy towards a more humane future (the Sophia principle), we broaden our perspective from purely ecclesiastical history to the cosmic development of humanity.

Here is a proposal for an expanded, organic structure that situates these currents within the overall East-West framework:

1. The cosmic opposites: Lucifer and Ahriman (The Vertical)

To understand the Greek and the future, we must define Steiner’s polar forces. They span the field within which the human being must find their centre:

Lucifer (The East / The Past): The power of spiritualisation, dissolution, ecstasy, pride and escape from the material world. He seeks to turn human beings into ‘gods’ before they are ready.

Ahriman (The West / The Future): The power of solidification, materialism, abstraction, technology and pure logic. He seeks to bind humanity to the earth (the logical ultimate consequence of the Council of 869).

2. The Greek Enigma: Apollonian and Dionysian (Harmonisation)

For Steiner, Greece is the historical setting in which these cosmic forces were moulded into a human cultural form. Here, Lucifer and Ahriman are reflected in cultural life:

The Dionysian current (Luciferic in character): The element of intoxication, ecstasy, the chorus and the connection with the ancient, cosmic mysteries of the East. It is the immersion in the Will of the World.

The Apollonian current (tending towards Ahriman, yet formative): The element of clarity, form, geometry, sculpture and the individual. It tames the Dionysian through the beauty of earthly form.

The Greek equilibrium: In the Greek temple and in tragedy (where Apollo and Dionysus interact), humanity found, for a brief historical moment, the perfect balance between spiritual ecstasy and earthly form.

3. The historical rupture: the East–West dichotomy and the Council

The West (Ahrimanic tendency): Develops the intellect, Roman law and dogma (Council of 869), culminating in the technocratic, patriarchal power structure of institutions.

The East (Luciferic tendency): Remains within mysticism, feeling and devotion, but often loses touch with the concrete shaping of the earth (as Steiner often described in relation to the Russian/Eastern soul).

4. Overcoming patriarchy: The role of women and the Sophia principle (A more humane future)

This brings us full circle to your concern about patriarchy. From an anthroposophical perspective, patriarchy is closely linked to the Ahrimanic-intellectual epoch (the ‘paternal’ principle of pure form, law and power structures, which triumphed at the Council of 869). According to Steiner, a ‘more humane future’ requires the birth of the fully human:

The intellectual soul is masculine and abstract: patriarchy has made the world technological and bureaucratic (the West).

The soul of consciousness and the future call for the Sophia principle: the ‘divine Sophia’ (wisdom) is a feminine principle. A more humane future is only possible if the intuitive, spiritual and vital force (which historically has tended to be associated with the feminine pole) breaks through the rigid, patriarchal structures of the West.

Not reversal, but synthesis: it is not a question of replacing patriarchy with matriarchy, but of uniting the Luciferic-feminine (intuition, connectedness) and the Ahrimanic-masculine (structure, clarity) within the Christ principle (the centre).

Could we also include a brief digression on dance here? Circle dances, community and ecstasy are widespread here; on the one hand, what is the more Apollonian manifestation of dance?

This fits absolutely organically into the overall Greek picture! For Rudolf Steiner, dance – and movement in general – was the art form that directly connects the human body with the cosmic hierarchies and forces.

Particularly in Greece, where you can still experience circle dances and Dionysian ecstasy first-hand, the polar interplay between Apollo and Dionysus can be wonderfully observed through dance.

Here is the digression that we can incorporate perfectly into our new structure:

Dance as a cosmic field of tension in Greece

1. The Dionysian manifestation: ecstasy, community and the circle dance

The Dionysian current in dance expresses the Luciferic principle in its redeemed, life-affirming form:

Overcoming the ego: In Dionysian dance, the separation between people dissolves. One dances ‘out of oneself’ (ecstasy literally means ‘to step out’) in order to become one with the community and with nature. [1]

The circle dance as the primordial form: The circling (as seen to this day in the Greek Kalamatianos or Syrtos) mimics the movement of the planets around a spiritual centre. No single person dominates; the individual submits to the cosmic rhythm.

The flow of the will: It is a dance arising from the metabolic-limb system (according to Steiner’s threefold division). It springs from the pure, unconscious will to live and connects the human being with the chthonic (earthly) and cosmic forces of the East.

2. The Apollonian manifestation: geometry, clarity and the round dance

The Apollonian current forms the exact antithesis. It tends towards the form-giving, structuring principle:

The visualisation of form: the Apollonian dance is not a state of ecstasy, but geometric architecture in motion. It is guided by symmetry, precise lines, sequences of steps and clear gestures.

The individual in all their dignity: Whilst Dionysus dissolves the self within the collective, Apollonian dance emphasises the upright, noble form of the individual. Every step is deliberate, controlled and perfectly executed. A historical example of this is the ancient Greek geranos (the crane dance), which traced the winding yet geometrically precise paths of the labyrinth.

The element of observation: Apollonian dance is, in the best sense, ‘a joy to behold’. It appeals to the nervous and sensory systems. It transforms movement into a living image, a three-dimensional sculpture in time

The synthesis: Why this is important for the future (and the Sophia principle)

When we draw a connection to patriarchy and a more humane future, dance becomes a powerful symbol:

The patriarchy of recent centuries has either banned dance, condemned it as sinful (Luciferian), or forced it into rigid, purely mechanical forms (Ahrimanic).

In a more humane future – which Steiner also sought to prepare for through the invention of eurythmy (the visible language and music) – both elements come together:

Apollonian clarity ensures that human beings do not lose their sense of self and their bearings (protection against patriarchy and the abuse of power).

Dionysian community ensures that forms do not become rigid, but are infused with love, life and warmth (the feminine Sophia principle).

How does this expansion feel to you? Now that you are in Greece, would you like to delve deeper into these polar dance forms and mysteries, or should we now turn our attention directly to how this Sophia principle is historically intended to replace patriarchy?

Not deeper at this point
